Seeds 2016

by Charmaine Tan and Megan Sin
under the mentorship of Yellow Chair Productions

What does it mean to be successful in Singapore? When was the last time you were satisfied with yourself?

Delving into the repercussions of building self-worth solely upon one's achievements and wealth, Seeds explores the loneliness, self-inflicted harm, anger and disappointment amidst the steadfast chase of these Singaporeans. Set against the context of the Singapore TOTO lottery system, Seeds features the two average Singaporeans Fo Fo and Tu Tu, on the constant pursuit of an ideal.

After weeks of gardening, the TOTO plant only grew a little more than a metre, far from blossoming. Adopting the common religious practices in our neighbourhoods, Seeds brings to attention one's desperation for success through the portrayal of a community of neighbours recognising a tomato as a TOTO deity that is capable of blessing them with winning numbers.

With just a little more soil, milk, they believe it will eventually blossom and deed them with the winning numbers. Albeit, it's just a hope.

Like little seedlings and fully-blossomed flowers, the innate desire for growth and recognition will always exist.

However, what happens when there lies no fruits of the ideal success when you believe you have given your all?

Perhaps, you would like to believe you are a boiled seed.

Perhaps, you would comfort yourself by believing that you were planted in a wrong pot. A pot too small for you.

Perhaps, you would remember and label everything as a bad life.

And

Maybe some day, in this place, achievements will not be your everything.

Maybe one day, it would be better that you realise that you can only be your only source of everlasting hope.

Perhaps, maybe

Seeds was performed in a void deck, Tampines Avenue 5 block 858 &858B, on 23 and 24 July 2016.
